8 Characterizing Opioid Overdose Deaths in Children (COODC Study)

Abstract Background With the opioid epidemic numbers of fentanyl-related adult deaths are increasing in Canada but there is limited knowledge fentanyl’s effect on paediatric deaths. Objectives Our aim to describe cases fatal toxicity, and their characteristics, help guide public policy health care system response. Design/Methods Patient information was collected from investigative aid (OIA) database, which collects all suspected opiate-related Ontario. A chart review performed patients less than 10 years age between October 1st, 2017, 31st, 2021. characteristics were calculated as percentages a descriptive analysis conducted. Results childhood occurred, average 1.9 (Table 1). The causative fentanyl alone 40% cases, combination 40%, hydromorphone methadone with 10% each. Most involved improperly stored medication or illicit substances )2. All had previous child protection service involvement. Conclusion In age, ten opioid-related over four years, children younger 5 years. Fentanyl primary drug 80% cases. This demonstrates rise elucidates areas for change, including education, proper storage substances, implications system.
